Document Attestation in Dubai

Translation and attestation are different steps. Some documents need one, some need both.

Document attestation in Dubai means getting an official stamp or seal from a recognized authority - MOFA, an embassy, a notary public, or a UAE government entity - to prove your document is genuine. It is not the same as translation. Some documents need translation first, some need attestation first, and some need both in a specific order.

Arkan handles the steps we are authorized to handle on your behalf - and clearly guides you through any step that requires your personal presence, UAE Pass, or original-document presentation.

What is Attestation?

If someone told you a document needs to be "attested" or "legalized," this is what they mean.

Attestation

An official stamp or seal from a recognized authority confirming the document is genuine. MOFA, an embassy, a notary public, or a UAE government entity applies the stamp after verifying the document's origin.

Result: The document carries proof of authenticity recognized by the destination authority.

Translation

Converting the document from one language to another, stamped by an MOJ-licensed translator (or Arkan company stamp for pairs with no MOJ translator). Translation changes the language; it does not prove authenticity.

Result: A legally valid translated copy in the target language, accepted by the receiving authority.

Many documents need both - but the order matters. Some require translation first, then attestation. Others require attestation of the original first, then translation of the attested version.

Arkan checks your document's full route before quoting - so you know exactly which steps apply and in what order.

Attestation Types

Each authority serves a different purpose. Your document may need one, or a combination in sequence.

MOFA Attestation

Ministry of Foreign Affairs attestation. A UAE federal stamp confirming the document has been verified at the national level. Required for most documents leaving the UAE or being submitted to foreign entities.

Common for: Educational certificates, personal status documents, commercial documents going abroad.

Embassy / Consulate Attestation

A stamp from the destination country's embassy or consulate in the UAE. Required when a document will be used in a specific foreign country that requires their own diplomatic verification.

Common for: Work permits abroad, family visa applications, business setup in foreign jurisdiction.

Notary Public Attestation

Notarization by a UAE Notary Public. Confirms the signatory's identity and willingness, or authenticates copies of original documents. Often a prerequisite before MOFA attestation.

Common for: Powers of attorney, statutory declarations, contract signings, copy certification.

UAE Government Entity Attestation

Attestation by a specific UAE government entity - such as the Ministry of Education (for academic documents), DHA (for medical documents), or other specialized authorities that verify documents within their domain.

Common for: Degree equivalency, professional license verification, sector-specific compliance.

We provide: step-by-step instructions, appointment booking guidance, required document checklist.

During the route check, we label every step as Done-for-You or Guide-Only before quoting - so you know exactly what to expect.

Do I Need Translation, Attestation, or Both?

The answer depends on your document type, issuing country, and receiving authority.

Translation Only

Document already accepted as genuine by the receiving authority - it just needs to be in the right language. Common for internal UAE court filings.

Attestation Only

Document is already in the required language - it needs authentication stamps. Common for documents issued abroad being used in the UAE.

Both (in specific order)

Document needs language conversion AND authentication. The order matters - some need translation first, others attestation first.

Not sure which applies to your document? Two options:

Common Attestation Routes

Every document has a route. These are the most common patterns we see.

Educational Documents Going Abroad

Degree, diploma, transcript → Ministry of Education attestation → MOFA → Destination embassy. Translation may be required before or after depending on the destination country.

Personal Status for UAE Use

Foreign marriage/birth certificate → Home country attestation → UAE embassy in home country → MOFA → Translation if needed by receiving authority.

Commercial Documents

Company documents for foreign use → Notarization → Chamber of Commerce (if applicable) → MOFA → Destination embassy. Translation paired as needed.

Powers of Attorney

POA → Notary Public attestation → Translation (if cross-language) → MOFA (if going abroad) → Embassy (if required by destination). Personal presence required at notary step.

Your document may follow a different route. Send it to us - we map the full route before starting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is document attestation?
Attestation is the process of getting an official stamp or seal from a recognized authority (MOFA, embassy, notary public, or UAE government entity) to confirm that a document is genuine. It does not change the language of the document - that is translation. Attestation proves authenticity; translation converts language.
What is the difference between MOFA attestation and embassy attestation?
MOFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs) attestation is a UAE government stamp confirming the document has been verified at the federal level. Embassy or consulate attestation is a stamp from a foreign country's diplomatic mission in the UAE, required when a document is going to that country. The order is typically: notarization → MOFA → embassy - but the exact route depends on the document type and destination.
Do I need translation before attestation?
It depends on the document and the receiving authority. Some authorities require MOJ-certified translation before they will attest the document. Others attest the original first, then you get it translated. Arkan checks your document's full route and tells you the correct order before starting any work.
How long does attestation take?
Timelines vary by authority. MOFA attestation typically takes 1-3 working days. Embassy attestation varies widely - some embassies process within days, others take weeks. Notary public attestation is usually same-day. Arkan confirms expected timelines during the route check before quoting.
What does 'Done-for-you' mean versus 'Guide-only'?
Done-for-you: Arkan physically submits and collects documents from the authority on your behalf, where your written authorization allows us to act. Guide-only: any step that requires your personal presence, UAE Pass login, biometric verification, or presentation of original documents in person. We clearly label which steps are which - no surprises.
How much does attestation cost?
Cost depends on the attestation type (MOFA, embassy, notary), the number of documents, and whether translation is also required. Government fees are fixed by the authority; our coordination fee depends on the route complexity. Send us the document via WhatsApp for a clear breakdown - no hidden charges.
What happens if my document is rejected?
Rejections usually happen because a prior step was missed (e.g., translation was needed first, or a notarization was skipped). Arkan's route check is designed to prevent this - we identify every required step before submission. If a rejection does occur, we diagnose the reason and advise on the correction path.
Do you offer urgent attestation?
Some authorities offer expedited processing for additional fees. Where available, we can submit under urgent/express channels. However, embassy processing times are controlled by the embassy - we cannot guarantee faster processing than the authority allows. We confirm what is realistically achievable during the route check.
