Why Sector Expertise Matters in Legal Interpretation

A court interpreter does not simply convert words between languages. They operate inside a legal system with its own procedural vocabulary, evidentiary rules, and power dynamics. The interpreter must understand not just the words, but the procedural weight behind them.
In Dubai Courts, the judge controls the pace of consecutive interpretation. They may direct questions to the interpreter, ask for clarification, or request that a statement be re-interpreted. An interpreter who does not understand UAE Civil Law procedure will struggle to keep up - not because of language, but because of context.
In DIFC Courts, the procedural format follows English common law: cross-examination, witness statements, and disclosure. The terminology is different. The register is different. The interpreter needs practitioner-level understanding of both systems.

What Happens During a Court Interpretation
01. Pre-Session Briefing
Interpreter reviews case summary, charges, and key terminology. Meets with client or legal counsel to clarify expected proceedings.
02. Credential Presentation
Interpreter presents credentials to the judge. Where the proceeding requires a sworn oath, the interpreter is confirmed as sworn or registered before assignment and takes an oath to interpret faithfully and accurately, without addition or omission.
03. Live Interpretation

04. Post-Session Review
Interpreter confirms all key statements were accurately rendered. Flags any terminology that requires written clarification for the record.
