What GDRFA Requires in Dubai

The General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) processes Golden Visa applications. Their document requirements are consistent: every non-Arabic document in your application must have an MOJ-certified Arabic translation. Not a company-certified translation. Not a notarised translation. An MOJ-certified translation stamped by a translator individually licensed by the Ministry of Justice.

This applies regardless of which Golden Visa category you are applying under. The document list changes per category, but the certification standard does not. Documents issued outside the UAE will typically also need attestation or apostille before translation.

Common Documents by Golden Visa Category in Dubai

The documents you need translated depend on which category you are applying under. Here are the most common:

Investor Category

• Property title deeds - if the investment is real estate, the title deed needs translation (Arabic originals from DLD may not need translation, but foreign property documents do)
• Bank statements or investment certificates - showing the qualifying investment amount
• Trade license or commercial registration - for business investors
• Passport copies - typically submitted as-is, but some cases require certified translation of the data page

Professional / Specialist Category

• Degree certificates - the most common document we translate for this category. Must be attested or apostilled before translation if issued outside the UAE
• Professional licenses or certifications - medical licenses, engineering registrations, teaching qualifications
• Employment contracts or salary certificates - proving the salary threshold
• Reference letters - from current or previous employers, if required

Student / Graduate Category

• Degree certificates or transcripts - from a qualifying university
• Academic transcripts - showing grades or GPA
• University accreditation letters - confirming the institution’s ranking or accreditation status

Documents Common Across All Categories

• Police clearance certificates - from the applicant’s home country and any country of previous residence. These are almost always in a foreign language and need both attestation and translation
• Medical fitness certificates - issued in the UAE (usually in Arabic already, but bilingual versions may need the English side translated)
• Marriage certificates - if adding dependents to the visa
• Birth certificates - for dependent children

The Attestation-Before-Translation Sequence in Dubai

This is the step that causes the most delays. Foreign documents - anything issued outside the UAE - typically need attestation or apostille before they can be submitted to GDRFA. The correct sequence matters:

1. Get the document attested or apostilled in the issuing country - for Hague Convention countries (the UAE joined in 2024), this means an apostille from the competent authority. For non-Hague countries, this means the traditional chain: notarisation, foreign ministry attestation, UAE Embassy legalisation in that country
2. Get MOFA attestation in the UAE - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs authenticates the foreign attestation or apostille
3. Get MOJ-certified Arabic translation - the translation covers the original document content plus all attestation stamps and annotations

People frequently try to reverse steps 2 and 3 - getting the translation first, then attempting attestation. This works in some cases but not all. The safest sequence is attestation first, translation second, because the translation then covers the complete attested document including all stamps.

What Trips People Up

Expired documents. Police clearance certificates typically have a 3 to 6 month validity window. If your clearance was issued eight months ago, GDRFA will reject it - and you will need a new one, newly attested, and newly translated. We see this delay add weeks to applications.

Partial translations. Some applicants get only the main page of their degree certificate translated and skip the reverse side, the transcript attachment, or the accreditation stamp. GDRFA expects the complete document translated - every page, every stamp, every annotation.

Wrong certification tier. Company-certified translations are not accepted by GDRFA. We have seen applicants arrive with translations from overseas providers that carry a company seal but no MOJ stamp. These need to be redone from scratch under MOJ certification.

Missing attestation. A degree certificate from India translated in the UAE without first being apostilled by the Indian authorities. The translation is fine, but the underlying document is not authenticated. GDRFA may reject the entire submission.
